Chapter 15: Locked Up
I opened my eyes to find Smilex standing over me, staring into my soul. I immediately began to panic, but not before I noticed my abdomen ripped wide open. I could make out my stomach and intestines, and blood flowed freely from my sides. Then, the beast began to help itself, feasting on my insides. I tried to move, but something was holding me back. It was almost as if I were paralyzed. All I could do was watch in horror and scream in pain as Smilex consumed my innards.
And then I jolted up, my face and hair soaked with sweat. I looked down and realized my abdomen was perfectly fine and closed up. Another nightmare, I thought to myself. But my relief didn't last long. As I looked up, I noticed that I was in an unfamiliar setting. A small room, with plain, white walls and only one window, which was barred up. To the left was a big, steel door, with a smaller, sliding door near the top, most likely for accepting food and other necessities. I tried to remember what happened before I passed out. A police officer was interrogating me, and then tased me, I thought. But why? What could I have done to end up wherever I was? Then, it hit me. "Insane asylum". That's what set me off. But is that truly where I was? Regardless, I felt safe inside this small, protected room, so I figured it would be as good a time as any to try and get some sleep.
I tossed and turned for what seemed like hours, until I noticed the early morning sun shining through the single window in my room. That's when I heard a knock on my door. The sliding door opened up, and I heard a voice call out, "Fawcett. Breakfast. Get up, bub." Given that I hadn't eaten since last night, I figured my body needed the energy. I slowly rose up from my bed, stretched out, and made my way towards the door. I figured he'd just slide something through the sliding door and be on his way, but to my surprise, he unlocked the door and opened it. It made an unpleasant screeching sound as it scraped along the floor. I was met with the sight of a black guard, wearing sunglasses and holding a nightstick.
"Head down to the mess hall, and no funny business," he said. I noticed other people heading down the hallway in a single file line. Many of them seemed jittery and nervous, probably because they were truly insane. Not me, though. I didn't belong here. I slid into the back of the line and followed everyone else to the mess hall.
Upon arrival, I didn't see any familiar faces. Not that I really expected to; none of my friends had ever truly been insane. I grabbed a tray and headed for the food counter. The chefs were scooping up this unidentifiable slop and slapping it onto each inmate's tray. So much for bacon and eggs, I thought. At last, it was my turn, and the chef slapped a nice helping of the slop onto my tray. Was this shit even safe for human consumption? Despite the fact that it looked utterly unappetizing, my rumbling stomach was willing to take in anything at this point. I simply nodded to the chef and made my way to an empty table. No way I was going to be sitting around with any freaks. As I picked up my spoon and prepared to dine on the slop, I heard a familiar voice call out from behind.
"Need some company?" it said. I turned around and was pleasantly surprised to see Kyle making his way to my table and sitting down.
"You too, huh?" I asked.
"Yeah, I told them the truth," Kyle said. "But the pig wouldn't take it, and said I was insane. Next thing you know, I'm here, in this insane asylum."
"Same thing pretty much happened to me," I said. "But hey, at least we aren't alone in this nuthouse." With that, we bumped fists and hugged each other. It felt good to know that there was at least someone I could converse with during my stay here. But how long would my stay last? That's the question that still buzzed around in my head. Officer Buchanan said that I'd be updated regularly on the investigation, and that if my DNA wasn't to be found anywhere on the Salvatis' bodies, I'd be a free man. But if it was, I could end up in prison for life, or worse. Not that I was too worried; I hadn't even been aware of their bodies in the back room, let alone touched them. The only thing I killed, or rather, attempted to kill, was Smilex. That's when I realized Smilex was still on the loose. Sunny Falls was still in danger, and would be wiped out if I stayed in here for too long. I needed to formulate a plan to break out of here.
"Kyle, we gotta find a way out of here," I proclaimed.
"Sounds great," said Kyle. "Except this particular insane asylum is located downtown, and as such, security is pretty tight."
"Yeah, but it's not prison," I said. "We can find a way if we collaborate together, but we can't afford any mistakes. Personally, I'd be willing to pay this debt to society under normal circumstances, but we were framed, we don't belong here, and every day that we stay in here is just another opportunity for Smilex to strike again."
"So, what do you have in mind?" asked Kyle.
"Okay, listen closely," I started. I leaned in to whisper my master plan to Kyle. He seemed pleased by the details, and I was fairly confident it would work, but whether or not it would remained to be seen. As I finished, the black guard from before shouted from his megaphone for us to return to our rooms. We all lined up to head back down the hallway, while Kyle and I couldn't help but stare at each other in anticipation. We only had one shot at this. If we failed, we would never get out.
After a long wait, here's Chapter 15. Will Kyle and Brett be able to escape from the insane asylum? And what exactly is the "master plan"? Find out in the next exciting chapter of "Smile"!
