The Vickers looked like a more complex weapon, now that you mention it, but American engineering has been known to shock with its reliability.

Just look at the M1 Garand. First semi-automatic rifle to ever be deployed on the front lines, and it was highly effective. General George S. Patton even called it "the greatest battle implement ever devised".

I believe the USAS-12 was the first automatic shotgun, but that was manufactured in South Korea.
